Sublimating a pre-stitched neoprene stubby holder is not particularly difficult, but it does require a little more care than pressing a flat blank.

We tested the complete process using a sublimation-ready pre-stitched neoprene stubby cooler, from preparing the artwork and securing the transfer through to pressing and checking the finished result.

The biggest challenge is the existing stitching. Because the stubby holder has already been assembled, the seams can affect artwork positioning, contact with the transfer paper and pressure inside the heat press.

What You’ll Need

For our test, we prepared:

  • A sublimation-ready pre-stitched neoprene stubby holder
  • A sublimation printer and sublimation ink
  • Sublimation transfer paper
  • Heat-resistant tape
  • A mug or drinkware-style heat press
  • A rigid insert to support the cooler during pressing
  • A mirrored artwork file
  • Heat-resistant gloves for handling the hot blank

The exact time, temperature and pressure can vary between blanks and heat presses.

For that reason, we recommend using the settings provided by the manufacturer of your particular blank rather than assuming that one universal setting will work for every neoprene stubby holder.

1. Inspect the Stubby Holder Before Printing

Before setting up the artwork, we checked the blank carefully.

Look for:

  • Loose or uneven stitching
  • Creases in the neoprene
  • Marks on the polyester surface
  • Dust or lint
  • Irregular seams
  • Areas where the material does not sit evenly

This is a quick step, but it is worth doing.

Small pieces of lint or contamination can become much more noticeable once they have been pressed into a light-coloured polyester surface.

Why the Seam Matters

The stitched seam is slightly thicker than the rest of the neoprene. That small height difference can reduce contact between the transfer paper and the printable surface.

If a detailed logo or line of text crosses this area, part of the artwork may appear slightly faded, distorted or interrupted.

During our test, we found that placing important artwork within the main flat section of the holder gave a much cleaner result.

3. Print the Artwork in Mirror Image

Once the artwork was positioned correctly, we printed the sublimation transfer in mirror image.

This is essential for designs containing text, names, dates, logos with lettering, numbers, website addresses and QR codes.

Once transferred onto the cooler, the design will appear in the correct orientation.

Before attaching the transfer to the blank, we checked the printed sheet against the stubby holder one more time.

It is much easier to catch a reversed logo, incorrect size or placement problem before pressing than after the design has been permanently transferred.

4. Position and Secure the Sublimation Transfer

Next, we wrapped the printed transfer around the cooler and carefully aligned the artwork.

This step deserves more attention than it might seem.

Even a very small amount of movement during or immediately after pressing can create ghosting, where the edges of the design appear slightly doubled or blurred.

We secured the transfer using heat-resistant tape. The goal is to keep the paper:

  • Tight against the printable surface
  • Smooth rather than wrinkled
  • Properly aligned
  • Secure enough that it cannot slide
  • As flat as possible around the seam

We avoided placing tape directly over important printable areas.

What We Noticed During Testing

The area close to the vertical seam required the most attention.

If the transfer paper lifts away from the neoprene slightly at this point, the finished print can be noticeably lighter.

Taking a little more time to make sure the transfer sits firmly against the surface before pressing can make a substantial difference.

5. Use an Insert to Support the Pre-Stitched Cooler

Because the stubby holder was already sewn into shape, we placed a rigid insert inside it before pressing.

The insert helps the holder maintain its shape and pushes the printable surface against the heat press more evenly.

Without adequate support inside the cooler, pressure may be inconsistent across the print area.

The insert should fit firmly enough to support the neoprene, but it should not stretch the cooler excessively.

If the blank is heavily stretched during pressing, the finished artwork may look distorted once the insert is removed.

6. Position the Stubby Holder in the Heat Press

For our test, we used a drinkware-style heat press rather than pressing the stitched cooler completely flat.

We positioned the stubby holder roughly in the centre of the heating element so that the artwork received consistent heat and pressure.

The vertical seam was positioned carefully to avoid creating an unnecessarily high-pressure point.

This is particularly important with neoprene because excessive pressure can compress the material and leave visible marks.

What Temperature Should You Use for Sublimation Stubby Holders?

There is no single temperature and pressing time that we would recommend for every neoprene blank.

Results can vary depending on neoprene thickness, polyester fabric, heat press design, transfer paper, sublimation ink, heating element accuracy and pressure.

Follow the settings recommended for your particular blank.

If you are using a new product or a new supplier, press one test blank before beginning a larger production run. That small test can save an entire batch of coolers.

7. Remove the Transfer Carefully

Once pressing was complete, we removed the cooler carefully while keeping the transfer paper as stable as possible.

The blank and insert can remain extremely hot immediately after pressing, so heat-resistant gloves are useful.

Avoid allowing the transfer paper to slide across the polyester while everything is still hot.

Movement at this stage can sometimes cause ghosting even if the design remained perfectly still inside the press.

After removing the transfer, we allowed the stubby holder to cool naturally before making a final assessment of the print.

8. Check the Finished Sublimation Print

Once the cooler had cooled, we checked several areas.

Colour

The printed colours should appear strong and reasonably consistent across the main printable area.

Sharpness

Text, logos and fine artwork should have clean edges rather than soft or doubled outlines.

Positioning

The main design should sit where intended when the stubby holder is viewed normally.

Seam Area

We checked whether the print changed noticeably around the stitching. A very small difference around a raised seam can sometimes occur, but the seam should not significantly interfere with the main design.

Shape

The cooler should return to its normal shape without major pressure marks, permanent creases or obvious distortion.

What We Found During Our Sublimation Test

After running through the full process, four things made the biggest difference to the finished result.

1. Artwork Placement Matters More Than Expected

The safest approach is to treat the seam as a design boundary rather than assuming detailed artwork will print perfectly across it. We would avoid placing names, faces, logos or fine text directly over the stitching.

2. Secure Transfer Paper Is Essential

Movement causes ghosting very quickly. Heat-resistant tape is inexpensive, but properly securing the artwork is one of the easiest ways to improve the quality of a sublimated stubby holder.

3. Supporting the Cooler Improves Pressure

Using an insert helped maintain the natural shape of the pre-stitched cooler and provided more consistent contact with the heating surface.

4. Test One Before Printing a Batch

Even if you have sublimated neoprene before, a new blank can react differently. Neoprene thickness, polyester fabric and stitching construction can all affect the final result. One test piece gives you an opportunity to adjust pressure or artwork positioning before moving into production.

Can You Sublimate Over the Seam of a Stubby Holder?

You can extend artwork across a stitched seam, but we generally would not place important design elements directly over it.

The seam creates an uneven surface. That means pressure and heat transfer immediately around the stitching may be slightly different from the surrounding flat neoprene.

This is particularly noticeable with solid dark backgrounds, photographs, faces, fine geometric patterns, small lettering and detailed logos.

If your artwork uses a simple background pattern, a minor variation around the seam is unlikely to be distracting.

If the design requires very precise edge-to-edge printing, a flat blank may provide more control.

Choosing between a pre-stitched blank and a flat or foldable stubby holder depends on how you plan to print it.

Common Stubby Holder Sublimation Problems

Ghosting or Double Images

What it looks like: A faint duplicate appears next to parts of the design.

Common cause: The transfer paper moved while the sublimation ink was still hot.

How to reduce it: Secure the transfer firmly using heat-resistant tape and remove the paper carefully without allowing it to slide.

Pale or Faded Colours

If the finished print looks washed out, check:

  • The blank is actually suitable for sublimation
  • The heat press is reaching the expected temperature
  • The pressing time is appropriate
  • There is sufficient contact and pressure
  • You printed onto the correct side of the sublimation paper
  • The transfer was positioned tightly against the blank

Don’t immediately increase temperature or pressure without first checking the other possible causes.

Uneven Colour Around the Seam

This is one of the more common issues with pre-stitched blanks. The stitching creates extra thickness, which can reduce pressure directly beside the seam.

Where possible, move detailed artwork away from this area. A slight change in pressure or seam positioning inside the press may also improve the result.

White or Unprinted Areas

White areas usually indicate that the sublimation transfer did not make proper contact with the polyester surface.

Common causes include wrinkled transfer paper, a raised seam, insufficient pressure, poorly positioned tape, or a gap between the transfer and neoprene.

Check the transfer carefully before placing the cooler into the heat press.

Pressure Marks

Neoprene is soft and compressible. Using too much pressure can flatten the material or leave impressions from seams and edges.

The goal is sufficient contact between the transfer and polyester surface without unnecessarily crushing the neoprene.

Tips for Better Neoprene Sublimation Results

Keep Critical Artwork Inside a Safe Area

Don’t design right up to the seam simply because the file allows you to. Leave some breathing room around important text, faces and logos.

Use High-Resolution Artwork

Low-resolution photographs or logos will not become sharper through sublimation. Start with the highest-quality original artwork available.

Check Your Alignment Before Taping Everything Down

A quick paper mock-up can help confirm whether the artwork will sit where expected once the cooler contains a can.

Save a Reusable Template

If you’re printing the same blank regularly, create an artwork template showing overall print size, centre line, seam position, safe zone, bleed area and recommended logo area.

Keep Notes from Your Test Prints

Record the blank supplier, product thickness, heat press, temperature, pressing time, pressure, insert used and result. This makes it much easier to reproduce a successful print later.
